Production Design/Set Design/Projection Design/Technical Direction

Before art direction, I directed a lot of plays and led the production design for a lot more. See a sampling below.

Beautiful Child

A play by Nicky Silver

DIRECTED BY KIM SIKKEL

Chapel Hill Underground, February 2014

Last scene of Act I with projections
Beautiful Child

I designed this 2-act drama to be staged in the basement of a local bar. The show's main character was an artist; we incorporated canvasses in a variety of shapes and sizes for him to "paint" with projections.

Another look at the set during the build.

Clay tableware about to start baking. I think the broken ash tray and the wine bottle turned out especially well.

I used a variety of practical lamps that became the show's only lighting, besides the light and color from the projections.

I mapped this frame so that it looked like Ben was painting. We had to create the video and that allowed for this effect and Ben had to memorize the timing of the brush strokes. This is one of many effects in this production that help tell the story.

Detail on the mapped frames.

Testing out the alignment of the projector before the show.

Hanging the frames in Chapel Hill Underground

Frame designing/drafting for the projection mapping.

Ben and I working on preparing the frames to be hung.

A picture somebody snapped of me during tech rehearsal. I was probably building stages in the projection mapping program Isadora. Stressed but focused and excited.

Poster printed. Design by myself and Madeline Hurley

I designed all of the advertising for Beautiful Child. It was, for the most part, a colorful show.

Another shot of the whole set before the house opened.

Highlight video from the performance.

Another piece of the show's marketing mix. Print ad showing the family the show is about (not a compatible group).

Although listeners of binaural audio are highly encouraged to use headphones, I still wanted to mix the track as a binaural recording so that it could still be experienced when watching the video. Please use headphones for this video. I am very interested in creating immersive audience experiences and I think binaural recording (also called holophonic) is a fascinating method that should be used more in all types of media.
